Op zondag 12 december 2010 om 15.00 uur is ZWERM (ism Champ d’Action)  te gast in M HKA Antwerpen in het kader van de structurele samenwerking van Champ d’Action met het       M HKA.  Jaarlijks organiseert  Champ d’Action in het museum voor hedendaagse kunst 2 concerten en TIME CANVAS , een muzikale tentoonstelling waarbij een hele verdieping van het museum wordt ingenomen door musici en andere artiesten van Champ d’Action.  Het concert van ZWERM kadert eveneens in een structurele samenwerking die Champ d’Action en het gitaarkwartet een 2-tal jaar geleden opstartten en die ook de volgende jaren verder zal worden geïntensifieerd. Champ d’Action profileert zich oa via deze samenwerking als productiehuis voor hedendaagse muziekprojecten van  verschillende generaties interessante musici/componisten/kunstenaars.

Het ontstaan van de samenwerking met ZWERM

Enkele jaren geleden schreven 2 studenten gitaar van het Conservatorium Antwerpen zich in om mee te werken aan LAbO, het 2-jaarlijkse participatieproject van Champ d’Action, deSingel en het Koninklijk Conservatorium van  Antwerpen .  Hun interesse voor het hedendaags repertoire werd tijdens dit intensieve workshop project sterk aangewakkerd .  Niet lang daarna organiseerde Champ d’Action een grootschalig project met 100 elektrische gitaren : Hallucination City van Glenn Branca (De Vooruit en Kortrijk Happy New Festival ) .   Op dat moment werd de kiem gelegd voor het oprichten van een elektrisch gitaarkwartet in de schoot van Champ d’Action. De initiatiefnemers Matthias Koole, Kobe Van Cauwenberghe,Toon Callier en Johannes Westendorp spraken over het idee met Serge Verstockt , artistiek leider van Champ d’Action die hen een eerste project aanreikte met Power Flower , een multidisciplinair project rond mei 68 (deSingel en Flagey) .  Vanuit deze positieve ervaring  en een sterk gevoel van artistieke verwantschap , gekoppeld aan een gezamenlijk streven om interessante , hedendaagse muziekprojecten op te zetten , werd beslist om de samenwerking structureel uit te bouwen. Sinds 2008 woont en werkt Kobe Van Cauwenberghe in New York. Gitarist en componist Bruno Nelissen werd aangetrokken om het kwartet terug te vervolledigen.

Champ d’Action treedt sedertdien op als zakelijk producent van alle ZWERM producties, biedt repetitieruimte en technische ondersteuning, ondersteunt het ensemble promotioneel en bij verkoop.  De volledige zakelijke en productionele ondersteuning van ZWERM zit bij Champ d’Action zodat het ensemble zich vooral kan focussen op het artistieke werk en het uitbouwen van een eigen netwerk.  ZWERM staat soms alleen op het podium, soms samen met Champ d’Action of met één of meerdere artiesten uit de pool van Champ d’Action. Via het netwerk van Champ d’Action leren de ZWERM musici ook heel wat interessante componisten en andere kunstenaars op een organische manier kennen.

Champ d’Action zal zich de komende jaren verder blijven ontwikkelen en profileren als ensemble, productiehuis en studio voor hedendaagse muziek.  In het kader van kunstencampus deSingel breiden we onze werking verder uit op het vlak van  creatie, onderzoek, workshop- participatie- en educatieve projecten en multidisciplinaire samenwerkingsverbanden  met artistiek verwante organisaties en kunstenaars.

MODES OF INTERFERENCE
De elektrische gitaar is gedurende zijn snelle opkomst in de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw hét instrument gebleken van low culture, underground en revolutie.  Weinig instrumenten zullen zoveel recente symboliek toegekend krijgen en weinig instrumenten lopen tegelijkertijd zozeer het gevaar in deze symboliek verstrikt te raken en een karikatuur te worden van zichzelf.  Modes Of Interference is een programma waarin de iconografische waarde van de gitaar wordt ontleed en de 'typische' aspecten van de elektrische gitaar zoals feedback en het gebruik van effecten uitgangspunt vormen voor nieuwe verkenningen in relatie tot live-electronica.

On Sunday, December 12, 2010 at 15:00 pm ZWERM (in collaboration with Champ d'Action) will play in the Antwerp museum of contemporary art M HKA, in the context of the structural cooperation between Champ d'Action and MuHKA. Each year M KHA invites Champ d'Action to organise 3 events in the museum. Besides the annual multimedia festival TIME CANVAS, Champ d'Action also plays 2 concerts a year in the beautifull museum environment.  This concert is also part of the structural cooperation between Champ d'Action and the electric guitar quartet ZWERM. Champ d'Action presents itself through these collaborations as a production house for contemporary music projects.

The beginning of the cooperation with ZWERM

A few years ago two guitar students of the Conservatory in Antwerp enrolled for LAbORATORIUM,  the two-year participatory project by Champ d'Action, deSingel and the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. Their interest in contemporary music, during this intensive workshop project, was strongly stimulated. A few months later Champ d'Action organized a major project with 100 electric guitars: Glenn Branca Hallucination City (with de Vooruit Ghent and Happy New Festival Kortrijk). At that time, the idea arose to create an electric guitar quartet in the lap of Champ d'Action. ZWERM founders Matthias Koole, Kobe Van Cauwenberghe, Toon Callier and John Westendorp discussed the idea with Serge Verstockt, artistic director of Champ d'Action who handed them a first project with Flower Power, a multidisciplinary project on May 1968 (deSingel and Flagey). ZWERM was born... From this positive experience and a strong sense of artistic affinity, coupled with a common effort to create interesting, contemporary music projects, it was decided to expand the structural cooperation. Since 2008 guitarist and co founder of ZWERM Kobe Vancauwenberghe lives and works in New York. Guitarist and composer Bruno Nelissen was recruited to complete the quartet.

Since that time Champ d'Action acts as a business producer of all ZWERM productions, Champ d'Action offers rehearsal space and technical support and it supports the ensemble promo and sales. Sometimes ZWERM perform alone on stage, sometimes with Champ d'Action or with one or several other artists from the Champ d'Action pool. Through this network ZWERM musicians get to know the many important composers and artists of Champ d'Action.

The upcoming years Champ d'Action will continue to develop and profile itself as an ensemble and production house for contemporary music projects. With the support of Artcity deSingel Champ d'Action is expanding their operations further in terms of creation, research, workshop participation, educational projects and multi-disciplinary artistic collaborations with related organizations and artists.

MODES OF INTERFERENCE
During the second half of the 20th century the electric guitar turned out to be the ultimate instrument of low culture, underground and revolution. Few instruments recently received this kind of symbolism, but at the same risk getting trapped in this symbolism, thus becoming a caricature of itself. Modes of Interference is a showcase that analyses this iconographical value of the guitar, exploring 'typical' aspects of the electric guitar such as feedback and the use of external effects in relation to live-electronics.
