Seizoen 2010-2011 - Een nieuwe periode van openheid en muzikale vrijheid
Het bekende muziektijdschrift The Wire is een bron van inspiratie voor artistiek leider Serge Verstockt bij het bepalen van de toekomstprojecten van Champ d'Action. Met dit statement in het achterhoofd werkte Champ d'Action verder aan een structuur waarbinnen alle verschillende stadia binnen het creatieproces een plek krijgen : onderzoek, educatie, participatie, samenwerking, creatie, productie , archivering . In de nieuwe seizoenbrochure 2010-2011 vindt u alles over Champ d'Action en over de verschillende producties en andere projecten die de organisatie volgend seizoen op stapel heeft staan in binnen- en buitenland. Indien u deze brochure niet ontvangt op uw thuisadres (per post) voor eind augustus betekent dit dat uw postadres nog niet in onze database werd opgenomen. Season 2010-2011 – A new period of openness and musical freedom The well-known music magazine ‘The Wire’ is a source of inspiration for artistic leader Serge Verstockt when deciding over Champ d’Action’s future projects.
It features all sorts of experimental music: free jazz, free improv, contemporary classical music, electro, progressive rock, … In the past century, it was as though some composers had the exclusive right of deciding what was and wasn’t good music. Today, the different points of view that appear in magazines such as ‘The Wire’ are just as interesting. In his own work and programming within Champ d’Action, Verstockt attempts to let these voices communicate with each other. That way, they enrich and fortify each other.
With this statement in mind, Champ d’Action has been working on a structure in which each different stadium of the creation process has its space: research, education, participation, collaboration, creation, production, archiving. The new season brochure 2010-2011 will feature everything about Champ d’Action and its national and international productions and other projects that the organization has in store for the coming season. Zaterdag 11 september 2010 - Kaaitheater Café - 22.30 uur Champ d’Action zette de laatste jaren al bijzonder avontuurlijke improprojecten op touw. Zo ging het ensemble aan de slag met componist Richard Barrett en met het Collectief reFLEXible of stortte het zich op Cornelius Cardew’s grafische partituur ‘Treatise’. In het kader van het Klarafestival 2010 laten de musici van Champ d’Action hun creativiteit los op Gustav Mahler’s bekende orkestliederen: de ‘Kindertotenlieder’. De muziek van Mahler en de gedichten van Friedrich Rückert vormen de basis voor een nieuwe cyclus. Met live electronics, stem, elektrische gitaren, cello en contrabas zoekt Champ d’Action ruim 100 jaar na de première van de ‘Kindertotenlieder’ een hedendaags antwoord.
In the past few years, Champ d’Action has forged a number of particularly adventurous improvization projects. To give a few examples, the ensemble has worked hand in hand with composer Richard Barrett, the free jazz collective reFLEXible and has performed Cornelius Cardew’s grafical score ‘Treatise’. At the 2010 Klarafestival, Champ d’Action’s musicians will unleash their creativity on Gustav Mahler’s famous orchestra songs: the ‘Kindertotenlieder’. Mahler’s music and Friedrich Rückert’s poems function as a base for a new cycle. With live electronics, voice, electric guitars cello and bass, Champ d’Action seeks a contemporary answer to ‘Kindertotenlieder’, a good hundred years after its première.

Zaterdag 25 september 2010 - Concertgebouw Brugge - 20.00 uur Woensdag 24 november 2010 - deSingel Antwerpen -20.00 uur Zondag 13 februari 2010 - Theater aan 't Vrijthof Maastricht - 15.30 uur Frederic Rzewski (°1938 - USA) is componist, virtuoos pianist en mede-oprichter van het haast mythische improvisatie-ensemble Musica Elettronica Viva. Hij woonde tot voor kort in Brussel en was gedurende vele jaren docent aan het Conservatorium van Luik. Zijn pionierswerk op het vlak van vrije improvisatie en elektronische muziek geldt als inspiratiebron voor talloze andere componisten en improvisatiemuzikanten. Redenen genoeg voor Champ d’Action om in het spoor te treden van deze ontzettend veelzijdige kunstenaar. Champ d’Action koos voor een overzichtsconcert, een documentaire benadering van Rzewski’s omvangrijke oeuvre, met een zijsprong naar het werk van collega en geestesgenoot Christian Wolff. Het gekende ‘Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues’ voor twee piano’s, dat gebaseerd is op een arbeidersprotestlied, vormt het vierde deel uit de North American Ballads. Pianisten Yutaka Oya en Benjamin Van Esser spelen de blues, zoals ze nimmer werd gehoord. In ‘To The Earth’ voor percussie en stem brengt percussionist Marcel Andriessen een ode aan de aarde met behulp van ‘gestemde bloempotten’. Ook in het recente ‘Main Drag’ - een roadstory voor negen musici - zorgt de percussiepartij voor de stuwende energie. In Wolffs ‘In Between Pieces’ biedt de componist de uitvoerder veel vrijheid: de musicus moet als zelfstandig denker en kunstenaar een grote eigen artistieke input leveren bij het vertolken van deze partituur.‘Les Moutons des Panurge’, een haast legendarische brok minimal music uit 1969, waarbij Rzewski zich liet inspireren door het kuddegedrag van schapen, vormt het slotstuk van dit concert. Een ogenschijnlijk eenvoudige partituur wordt een ware uitputtingsslag voor de muzikanten.
Frederic Rzewski (°1938 – USA) is composer, virtuoso pianist and co-founder of the near mythical improvisation ensemble Musica Elettronica Viva. Until recently, he lived in Brussels and was a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Liège for many years. His pioneering work on the area of free improvisation and electronic music is a source of inspiration for countless other composers and improvization musicians. Reason enough for Champ d’Action to step into this tremendously versatile artist’s shoes. Champ d’Action opted for a summary concert, a documentary approach of Rzewski’s extensive oeuvre, accompanied by the work of artistic and mental colleague Christian Wolff. The known ‘Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues’ for two pianos, which is based on a blue-collar protest song, forms the fourth part of the North American Ballads. Pianists Yutaka Oya and Benjamin Van Esser play the blues like it was never heard before. In ‘To The Earth’ for percussion and vocals, percussionist Marcel Andriessen brings an ode to earth with the aid of ‘tuned flowerpots’. In the recent ‘Main Drag’ – a road story for nine musicians - the percussion party also delivers the driving force. In Wollf’s ‘In Between Pieces’, the composer offers extensive freedom to the performer: the musician is, as an independent thinker and artist, required to deliver a large artistic input when performing this score. ‘Les Moutons des Panurge’, a near legendary piece of minimal music from 1969, for which Rzewski was inpired by the herd behaviour of sheep, makes up the final part of the concert. A seemingly simple score becomes a true battle of attrition for the musicians.

Vrijdag 17 september 2010 - 20.00 uur - Studio 3 (deSingel) We'll ask the questions around here, een titel die de lading dekt: direct, brutaal en compromisloos. Hoewel afkomstig uit verschillende muzikale stromingen drijft eenzelfde stuwende energie de werken aan. Deze energie gaat vooraf - en voorbij - de gebruikelijke kaders van rock, alternatief of nieuw gecomponeerd waarmee de hedendaagse muziek nogal een geplaagd wordt; en het is daarom niet verwonderlijk deze terug te vinden in werken met zo verschillende achtergronden. Een korte serie vlijmscherpe stukken uit de koker van het vermaarde Fred Frith Guitar Quartet wat in de jaren negentig cutting edge rock wist te verbinden met vrije improvisatie en geprepareerde gitaartechnieken wordt gekoppeld aan het nieuwe project van Cédric Dambrain 'Plq'. Dambrains vervreemdende, soms zelfs futuristisch aandoende klankwerelden maken duidelijk dat een nieuwe generatie componisten zich weinig aantrekt van traditionele kaders.
We'll ask the questions around here’, a loaded title: direct, brutal and without compromise. However descendant from different musical movements, one driving force is behind these works. This energy surpasses the regular boundaries of rock, alternative of newly composed, with which contemporary music is oftenly plagued by. A short series of razor-sharp pieces, sprung from the seeds of the renowned Fred Frith Guitar Quartet – which connected cutting-edge rock to freely improvised and prepared guitar techniques in the nineties – is linked to the new project ‘Plq’ by Cédric Dambrain of Brussels. Dambrain’s alienating, sometimes even futuristic-like sound worlds show that a new generation of composers do not care much for traditional boundaries.
